The work of Indian artist Nikhil Chopra (°1974) is located in the border region between theatre, performance, painting, photography and sculpture. After training in the United States, Nikhil Chopra returned to India in 2005. He currently lives and works in Bombay. In 2002 he created his first character, Sir Raja. The characters he plays represent both the colonial history of his country and his own history. Yog Raj Chitrakar is his latest character to date. His performances are largely improvised and can last several days.
He has had recent performances at the Serpentine Gallery in London, the Mori Art Museum in Tokyo and at the Triennial of Yokohama. He has also participated in the international performance festival Khoj Live 2008 in New Delhi. His videos, films and photographs have been shown in group exhibitions such as Posing at the Abrons Art Center in New York (2007), House of Mirrors at the Grovsner Gallery in London (2007) and during Asian Contemporary Art Week in New York (2006).
